Orvieto is a commune of about 25,000, with 7000 on the plateau. It is located an hour north of Rome.  It is well connected by train to all points in Italy.  The town was the ancient capitol of the Etruscan federation, seat of the medieval papacy, and is strikingly beautiful.  It sits atop a tufa outcrop overlooking the vineyards and wheat fields of Umbria.  Its size and location are perfect for study abroad in that it is small and intimate enough that everyone knows everyone and large enough that there is much to do.  Moreover it is an easy train ride from Florence and Rome.  Students immediately feel at ease in this safe and friendly city.
